Léwé 2008
The performance Léwé was the apotheosis of a long term training by Le Grand Cru with Company Waló. In the performance artistic and didactic qualities meet. Next to 18 dancers from Waló, 65 children participate. Léwé is produced for a local audience in Benin. A story about a girl that runs away as her parents don't want her to dance. She is picked up by a man who wants to make money of her talent. The 'choreographer' demands permission from the parents..... The story is recognizable for a local audience but set in a form of European dance theater. The performance was regarded an artistic revolution in Benin and will go on tour in Benin in 2009. www.assowalo.com
Reviews
Undulating body movements on rhythmical percussion, mimic scenes melted with dance sequences representing daily life at home, in town, at the market; this all gave the performance her beauty which seduced the audience to ovations which testifies of a good communication between the performers and the audience. Special about the performance is that it gave the Benin audience the chance to watch itself in a mirror and to get to know herself better in her daily actions and behaviour. In combination with the artistic quality and originality the performace Léwé shows that besides passion or talent one definitely needs training and good education in order to professionalise the arts... Without hesitation one can put clearly that a magical dance performance has been created.
